Description

This is a marine emergency duties course designed for crew members of non-pleasure vessels of not more than 150GT which operate not more than 25 miles from shore. This course outline meets the requirements under TP 4957 – Marine Emergency Training Courses for the applicable section.

Learning Outcomes

To enable course participants to:

  • Develop a basic understanding of the hazards related to the marine environment and their own vessel.
  • Understand how to prevent shipboard incidents, including fire.
  • Gain the knowledge needed to raise and respond to alarms and deal with emergencies.
  • Acquire the ability to provide assistance in fire and abandonment situations.
  • Develop the knowledge and skills necessary for personal survival and rescue.

Transport Canada Certificate

Prerequisites

  • Transport Canada requirements state “A person must be at least 15 years of age to take the SDV-BS course.”

Before attending this course, you must take an online fatigue management course from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety.

A Candidate Document Number (CDN) is required to complete this course. If you already have a Candidate Document Number (CDN), there is no cost to complete the Fatigue Management course.

If you don’t yet have a CDN, you can apply for one through Transport Canada using this link.

To access the Fatigue Management at Sea course, visit the CCOHS registration page and follow these steps:

• Step 1: Register with the CCOHS.

• Step 2: Sign-in using the password provided in the registration confirmation email.

Please note, free access is provided to Canadian seafarers courtesy of Transport Canada Marine Safety and Security. Once you’re done the course, make sure to print a copy of your training certificate. This certificate proves that you’ve completed the training and you will need to provide a copy to shortcoursehelp@mi.mun.ca prior to attending.
