Description

This introductory course is intended for new entry seafarers who intend to embark upon a marine career where they form part of the bridge watch team. Its purpose is to provide awareness of the hazards, knowledge, skills, and standards of safe working procedures leading to certification as Bridge Watch Rating in compliance with International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) 1978, as amended by STCW 1995 and Transport Canada Marine Safety TP10936E.

Learning Outcomes

  • To prepare the student for entry into a marine career.
  • To give the student a basic understanding of the organization and structure as found on a typical merchant marine vessel.
  • To allow the student to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to become part of a crew as found on any seagoing vessel

Prerequisites

  • Participants must be 16 years of age to enroll in the Bridge Watch Rating Training course and must be 18 years of age on the day on which they receive their certificate of competency for a Bridge Watch Rating.
  • Participants may complete the following Marine Emergency Duties before enrolment in the course or during the course as part of the BWR training course:
    • Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats (PSC), and;
    • STCW Basi Safety (STCW BS)

Notes

In accordance with Transport Canada requirements, the pass mark for this course is 70%. Students must achieve, at minimum, a grade of 70% on the final written and practical exams to pass the course. In accordance with Marine Institute and Transport Canada requirements, students must attend, at minimum, 90% of scheduled course time to receive a passing grade. Students who have less than 90% attendance will receive a maximum grade of 69%.
