Description

This course is designed to provide the student with knowledge and a practical understanding of Dynamic Positioning (DP). The concepts taught will form the basis for further studies in dynamic positioning.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course the student should:
  • Know the principles of Dynamic Positioning (DP).
  • Have a basic understanding how to set up a DP system.
  • Have an understanding of the practical operation of associated equipment, including position reference systems.
  • Be able to recognize and respond to the various alarms, warning and information messages.
  • Be able to relate the DP installation to the ship system, including (but not limited to); power supply, manoeuvring facility, available position reference systems and nature of work.
  • Be able to relate DP operations to the existing environmental conditions of wind, sea state, current/tidal stream and vessel movement.
  • Have an understanding to the Nautical Institute DP Operator's training scheme, including the requirements for completion of the logbook and the procedure for obtaining a DP certificate.

Prerequisites

Minimum requirements will be set at STCW Regulation II/1 - II/2 - II/3 Deck, Regulation III/1 - III/2 - III/3 Engine and III/6 for ETOs.

STCW Definition

  • II/1 Officers in charge of a navigational watch on ships 500gt or more.
  • II/2 Master or chief mate on ships 3,000gt or more.
  • II/3 Officers in charge of a navigational watch and Masters on ships of less than 500gt.
  • III/1 Officers in charge of an engineering watch in a manned engine room or designated duty engineers in a periodically unmanned engine room.
  • III/2 Chief engineer officers and 2nd engineer officers on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 3,000kW propulsion power or more.
  • III/3 Chief engineer officers and 2nd engineer officers on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of between 750kW and 3,000kW propulsion power.
  • III/6 Electro-technical officer.

Alternate appropriate Marine Vocational Qualifications will be considered on a case by case basis by the Nautical Institute.

Notes

This certificate will also include the Nautical Institute logo as well as a student number. Upon course completion, candidates must successfully complete the online examination administered by the Nautical Institute in order to receive the Nautical Institute Logbook.
 
Cadets enrolled in a regulated training program may apply for Dynamic Positioning Induction Training but must supply a signed letter from their respective school stating they are currently enrolled and in good academic standing.
